Today over at SmallBizMentor I spent some time discussing the importance of community colleges and the continuing education opportunities they offer people in business. I believe that it is vital that women in business take advantage of the classes offered to those who are not seeking a degree ("continuing education"), both as students and teachers.
As you will read at SmallBizMentor, the benefits of teaching such courses are bountiful. Such teaching opportunities are especially valuable to women, who are accustomed to creating support networks and encouraging others along their pathways of education. With the number of women-owned or women-operated businesses in the United States alone, I'm sure there are plenty of courses that would be of interest to students in your area.
Such classes are also important for women who have been off the job market or career pathway for a time. With the rapid rate at which technology changes, it's helpful to have an affordable way to catch up on new software programs or brush up your marketing and networking skills. Attending classes that specifically cater to the small businessperson is a great way to get to know potential colleagues or future employers, meet folks to cross-promote with, and find ways to create the business you dream of building "some day".
Don't limit yourself to business classes, though. My local community colleges offer everything from CPR certification classes (always excellent to have!), pastel painting (let your creative juices flow!), and t'ai chi and belly dancing lessons. Gotta stay fit, especially if you're working from home, where the Dr Pepper and the chocolate bars play.
Oh wait...that's my house. Guess I better sign up for some fitness classes myself, huh?
