I couldn't help but chuckle when I read Patty Orsini's comment in her MediaWeek piece about the "Hot List" in the magazine business. Stating, in part, that "it became clear that in order to be considered hot, a healthy dose of estrogen couldn’t hurt", Orsini does hit the nail on the head when it comes to the trends on the newsstand.
Now, I'm no major publishing exec, but even I can look at the number of magazines on my local B&N newsstand and figure out that the majority of them are focused entirely, or mostly, on women or women's interests. When I look around at the people I'm constantly bumping bums with when I bend over too quickly to look at the bottom rack, they are usually women. Not to say I haven't whacked any menfolk with my elbow when I stood back up, but usually it's the gals I'm laughing with and apologizing to. (I never claimed to be graceful, folks, but I do buy a lot of magazines.)
