Something so natural that we often forget to do..breathe. The baby needs her bottle, your son needs his brown bag lunch made, you have to take the meat out of the freezer so it will be thawed for dinner, your husband's shirt needs ironed; the list has started and it's not even 7am.
I think women today are getting better when it comes to taking time out for themselves, but sometimes the day just doesn't allow for it. So you ask, "How can I relax when I have all these responsibilities? When do I have time?" Well one important thing that might seem too simple until you actually start to do it; breathe.
I work in the health care field with senior citizens who are at times very demanding and unforgiving. So one day as I was leading a bingo game and Mildred starting yelling at Beatrice because she was in her seat, John was yelling out, "Did you say G 50 or 60," Margaret was demanding I come over to her table to read her numbers, and Gordon was screaming that he needed water, I stopped, stood in the middle of the room, closed my eyes and took a few deep breaths.
When I opened my eyes, I felt calmer and had better focus. I was able to organize my thoughts and come up with a solution to the problems without turning five shades of red because my blood pressure was going through the ceiling. This really was a wake up call for me. I know how hard it is to find time for yourself. But, this easy, quick idea might help get you through the moment. There's a site, coeduusfedu, that offers examples of different breathing techniques and lists the benefits of proper oxygen flow. Happy breathing everyone!
