Growing up Catholic, going through 12 years of Catholic schooling, I found USA Today's article on altar girls of particular interest. The Nebraska Diocese is the only one left in the U.S. that does not allow girls to serve during Mass. The Bishop of the Arlington, Virginia Diocese, Paul Loverde, just ended their female ban. Bishop Loverde is so excited, he said he hopes to see girls on the altar as soon as this Sunday.
Supposedly, girls were forbidden because church leaders felt boys were better suited for the role, in hopes they could be groomed to become priests. We all know the beating the Catholic Church is taking with the accusations of child abuse among priests, so is it time we also drop the ban on women not being accepted into the seminary?
The Catholic Diocese should really start to take a good hard look at the future of their organization, and realize there's not exactly a waiting list of men that are interested in becoming priests. So what are their options?
