Need some inspiration as you head toward midlife or as you strive to survive some turmoil in your world? I spotted an amazing book at the library today called Fearless Women: Midlife Portraits. Written by Nancy Alspaugh and Marilyn Kentz and combined with the photographic talents of Mary Ann Halpin, this coffee-table book blew me away as I flipped through it.
The cover shot was what caught my eye at first. How can anyone not be drawn in by a woman in an evening gown bearing a sword? (You may recognize her as Andrea Thompson, NYPD Blue's Detective Jill Kirkendall, by the way.) As I flipped through, though, the text drew me in. Each of the participants in this book supplied a snapshot of herself from her twenties or thirties, and the full-page photos of each spread show women of strength and wisdom ranging from forty to their mid-sixties.
Wow. Even just reading the introduction to this book is an encouraging, enlightening event. The descriptions of the participants, though, is amazing. Ranging from actresses and environmentalists to children's advocates, authors, and athletes; nannies, boxing coaches, holistic healers...strong women all. Fearless women.
The best part? If you end up buying your own copy, you can create your own special layout on the last pages...a two-page spread left intentionally blank so you can fill in information about your own "fearless friend". I think I've found Christmas gifts for several of my own already!
