According to Yahoo! News, today is International Women's Day and it's kicking off with a bang. Here in the US the debate about abortion rages on, while in Asia sexual violence and discrimination are under attack.
Interested in learning about the history of International Women's Day or finding events near you to participate in?
You might want to start off at the United Nations' site dedicated to today. This year's theme is "the role of women in decision-making". My favorite quote from the Message of the Secretary-General is:
The international community is finally beginning to understand a fundamental principle: women are every bit as affected as any man by the challenges facing humanity in the 21st century -- in economic and social development, as well as in peace and security. Often, they are more affected. It is, therefore, right and indeed necessary that women should be engaged in the decision-making processes in all areas, with equal strength and in equal numbers.
Did you know that there are now almost a dozen women Heads of State Government and that in Spain, Chile and Sweden, women actually have gender parity in their countries' governments?
No matter where you stand on issues such as abortion, definition of discrimination, "women's work", etc, it is always important to note the accomplishments of the women who have come before us. It is equally important to make sure that the women of the future are able to look to us, these several generations of women alive during the 21st century, as role models and examples for what can be.
