According to the UPI, telecommunications company Verizon was one of eighteen companies recently honored by the Women's Business Enterprise National Council (WBENC). Susan Phillips-Bari, president of WBENC, stated that the companies chosen "have gone beyond the basics of human resources and marketing diversity" and have recognized the business benefits of "contracting with quality women's businesses."
Today the organization also presents its 2006 Salute to Women's Business Enterprises. Created to recognize the contributions of women's business enterprises to the United States economy, the Salute also celebrates selected businesswomen as the annual Women-Owned Business Stars. The 14 women chosen for 2006 are leaders in their local business communities as well as their certified women-owned businesses.
