"I coulda been a contender!"
Are you a contender? Pop by WorkFromHomeMomma.com to see Marta Wells' thoughts about work-at-home moms (WAHMs) and share your work-from-home story. Our numbers are growing by leaps and bounds, in my estimation. As a homeschooling parent, I meet more and more women who have chosen to be stay-at-home moms (SAHMs) who are also looking for ways to bring in an income to help provide for their families. While many of these women don't consider themselves to be career-oriented, just as many do. I've seen ladies start out with simple ads on their homeschool weblogs and then turn into paid authors, selling e-books and curriculum-related products. Others are choosing to use affiliate marketing, multi-level marketing opportunities, and cottage industries to build their bank accounts - and give their kids a first-hand look at operating a small business.
I love Marta's comment that WAHMs are a "hybrid". I believe that we have been given the opportunity not just to earn an income and fulfill our desires to be home with our families, but also to help bridge the gap between the two contentious camps: stay-at-home moms and corporate-employed moms. Whether your choice to stay home is based on Biblical reasoning or a business decision, being a work-at-home mom means you have something in common with both sides.
It doesn't just have to be "black or white", ladies. We really can create a grey area that will allow for a better family life and the building of a career if we choose to do so. I don't know about you, but those Tupperware ladies I grew up watching always seemed to be the bee's knees to me. After all, they got paid to sell stuff, have a good time, and they could still be home when my friends got off the bus. Whether you're a writer, a Mary Kay representative, or a corporate attorney who has decided to telecommute, the WAHM world is open to you. Help us bridge the gap!
