Workerette's Bookshelf: Nice Girls Don't Get Rich

I found a book at the library recently that I'm going to either have to a) renew a half dozen times so I can memorize it or b) spring for a copy of.  Nice Girls Don't Get Rich: 75 Avoidable Mistakes Women Make with Money is written by Lois P. Frankel, PhD, author of Nice Girls Don't Get the Corner Office

Not being much of a "nice girl" myself, I'd always shirked the latter title due to, well, the title, which I considered a bit smarmy and focused on the female market.  However, my last trip to the library turned up little worth checking out, so I gave in and grabbed this book to see exactly how many of the 75 mistakes I might be making myself and if there were any effective remedies or just a bunch of gibberish about not leaving all the financial decisions to a man.

While that last sentence does come into play, it's not because the author has anything against husbands (although there's a very scary story in chapter five about a woman who trusted her husband to prepare tax returns that were, to put it politely, not quite kosher).  I'm not one for focusing on becoming money-rich, but I do like to make intelligent business decisions, and I believe this book would be an asset to those of you Workerettes who are the same way.

Ranging from mistakes such as "Not Knowing Your Net Worth" (do you know how to figure yours?) to "Trusting the Wrong People" (which even addresses how to handle terminating a business relationship with a financial adviser), each chapter and section about the individual mistakes also delves into coaching tips that explain how to avoid or overcome the mistakes as well.  Both personal and business wealth is discussed, and the relationships thereof, such as mistakes #16, "Letting a Deadbeat Dad Shirk His Responsibility", #70, "Allowing Adult Children to Lead Unrealistic Lifestyles", and #75, "Starting a Foundation without the Facts".

This is good stuff, from the self assessment to the resources in chapter nine, right down to the Action Plan on the last page.  Guess one of my mistakes would be to not have my own copy of this book...and I may have to resolve mistake # 63 ("Not Reading Nice Girls Don't Get the Corner Office")!
