I learned today of an interesting group that may be of use to some of you women writers and artists. The nonprofit organization A Room of Her Own was created in 2000 in an effort to provide patronage to female writers and artists. According to their website, the group is "dedicated to furthering the vision of writer Virginia Woolf by bridging the often fatal gap between a woman's economic reality and her artistic creation."
A Room of Her Own provides "Gift of Freedom" awards of up to $50,000 to "women with creative vision". (Applications and information about the 2006-2007 Literary Gift of Freedom Award for Fiction are available on their website.) They also offer a community forum and are accepting applications for a scholarship to the 2006 Taos Summer Writer's conference as well as writer's retreats.
Are any of you Workerettes members of A Room of Her Own or recipients of one of their offerings or awards? Be sure to let us know about your experiences with this organization!
