USA Today just did a story on the latest crash tests on minivans. The tests focused on side air bags. Versions of the 2006 Toyota Prius and six minivans made by DaimlerChrysler and GM were evaluated without side air bags and received poor results for side-impact tests.
The same vehicles that had optional air bags were tested and showed improvements. The Prius earned the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's top score in side protection. A Toyota spokesman said about 96% of Prius models are sold with side-air bags, but the option costs $650.
The minivan voted best performing overall, including front, side and rear impact, is the Kia Sedona. I have heard some horror stories about front air bags releasing and causing injuries, has anyone experienced problems with their side air bags injuring their kids?
