I can't believe it's 2006 and women are still not receiving proper pay. In USA Today, they covered this story, stating that the women's champion will make $1.117 million, while the men's champion will make $1.170 million, a difference of $53,000. The French Open has said they will pay their winners equal amounts for the first time this year, and the Australian and US Opens have paid equally for years.
A representative for Wimbledon said their judgment is made on the marketplace and what they believe to be fair. Also, the women players only play in three events, while the men play in five, and it just wouldn't be "beneficial" to have the women play the best out of five.
I don't know that much about the world of professional tennis, but give me a break!! The have no real reasoning for the inequality. I say see how many viewers and what percentage of their audience would stop watching if the women weren't there at all!!
