It's the age of the computer which means efficiency and convenience, but does it also mean health problems? On beliefnet, they look at how modern office equipment is effecting our health.
Repetitive motion disorder is the result of the same motions performed over and over during the course of your daily work. These repetitive motions usually strain muscles and tendons and result in syndromes such as Carpal Tunnel or Bursitis. Most common areas occur in hands, wrists, elbows, shoulders, feet, back, hips, legs and ankles. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health offers some preventative suggestions:
- Good posture
- Proper equipment such as elevated key pads for keyboards
Computer Vision Syndrome is another disorder that can come from excessive computer use. Eye strain is usually related to glare and poor lighting. NIOSH recommends:
- Anti-glare filters
- Ergonomic positioning of the computer screen
- Regular breaks for your eyes
Another syndrome I never thought about is Varicose Veins. In some cases they are just visually displeasing, but some people suffer discomfort such as burning, itching, throbbing, and cramping. Varicose veins can be caused from frequent sitting or standing. So try and remember to take precautions to avoid some of these syndromes.
