A new study conducted by Wake Forest University has found a connection to obsessive tanners and addiction to the UV rays. About.com published the article that says the UV rays have an effect on the production of endorphins, chemicals released from the brain that produce a euphoric like feeling in the body.
Endorphins are referred to as the bodies natural morphine, reducing the pain we feel. The study followed 16 people, 8 frequent tanners, 8 occasional tanners. The study participants were all given a drug to block the release of endorphins, and were told they had to use non-UV tanning beds for some of their visits.
Results showed that when the frequent tanners used the non-UV beds, they developed symptoms similar to narcotics withdrawal, while those who tanned only occasionally exhibited no signs of sickness. I admit I do go to the tanning beds on occasion, so this article captured my attention. I've never experienced withdrawal symptoms, but I do enjoy the relaxation, and peacefulness I feel when I tan. Anyone else experience this?

They have done this research for years and still cannot prove a thing. Tanning has a lot of positive benefits, but can be harmful if overdone.
