The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommend any woman who is pregnant, and has no complications, should be exercising. The article on beliefnet.com, lists several benefits of 30 minutes of moderate exercise a day:
- Less discomfort due to swelling
- Stronger abdominal and back muscles, which improves posture and could lessen back pain
- Increased energy
- Improved mood
- Enhanced quality of sleep
- Decreases excessive weight gain
- Can prevent gestational diabetes, especially for women who are overweight before pregnancy
Safe exercises that are recommended:
- Swimming
- Walking
- Stationary bike riding
- Elliptical machines
Anything that puts minimal stress on joints, involves smooth movements, and has low risk of falling or body contact, is considered safe for pregnant women.
I worked up until the day I delivered, and I was required to walk a significant amount each day. I had a great pregnancy and I really attribute that to the fact that I was able to stay active. Now, I did gain more weight than I should have, but that's only because the baby needed pizza and chocolate! (ha, ha)
