Pelvic Inflammatory Disease is an infection of the uterus, fallopian tubes, or other female reproductive organs. Ivillage warns of the health risks PID can impose if left untreated:
- Infertility
- Chronic pelvic pain
- Complications during pregnancy
- Sometimes Death
The U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention lists risk factors for PID as:
- Having multiple sex partners
- Use of an IUD
- Being sexually active at age 25 and under.
Some signs and symptoms include abdominal pain, irregular discharge, fever, irregular menstrual cycle, or pain during urination. PID can be treated with an antibiotic but, the antibiotic won't help with any damage that has already been done. I hope this helps raise awareness about the disease because 1 million women a year is a big number!
