Please describe the business you operate or service(s) you provide to clients and customers.
I’m a freelance web designer and I occasionally provide graphic design services for print when the need arises. I also provide consulting on websites, writing, blogs and blogging, and even design consulting for beginning designers.
What was the inspiration, or the catalyst for, the creation of your business endeavor?
I was working in a corporate job but designing my own blog and website on the side when a co-worker came to me and asked if I could design a website for a friend of hers. It was then that I realized I could actually make some money doing this. At the time it was just something I did on the side, in addition to maintaining my employer’s website. One day the time came for me to make a decision about my daughter and her daycare situation. I decided I would much rather take the time to be home with her if possible and web design was such a promising career choice for that goal.
What steps did you follow to build your business? Are you still in the process of planning your endeavor?
In the beginning it was very slow, but I was also still learning and had a long way to go, so I focused mainly on fine-tuning my skills while I picked up a few clients here and there. Part of that involved blogging and reading blogs by other great web designers. I found that the more I learned and grew as a designer the more the work came to me. I am still in the process, but I think I will always be. There’s never a point where you stop learning and improving.
