An important asset to any Workerette, single, married, or anywhere in between, is fiscal fitness. That's right, your budget can sometimes use a workout just as much as your body can. If you've taken a look at your checkbook or net worth statement and decided it's time to lose a few pounds (aka bills), then you may enjoy Jean Chatzky's book Pay It Down! From Debt to Wealth on $10 a Day.
According to the cover quotes, Chatzky's book "offers a simple, easy-to-follow strategy for getting out from under and regaining control of your financial future -- and your life." The book describes a ten step process that begins with assessing the problem, covers knowing and managing your credit score and spending, and finding money through debt consolidation, decreased spending, and liquidating assets to get yourself back on track. It ends with suggestions on how to cope if something goes wrong and ways to stay ahead, once you get there.
The whole concept here really makes me think of the weight-loss programs that seem to work the best. First one must figure out where exactly the problem lies (overeating = overspending, etc), lay out the manageable steps to take (one at a time, build your way there), and allows for the occasional slip up or much-needed treat. I believe Chatzky is on the right path here, and I think this book would be an excellent read for anyone who is trying to rebuild after a bad spell or who is trying to start off on the right foot fresh into the career world.
Have you read Pay It Down! yet? Did you implement the steps? Which ones were easiest for you to use, and which were the most difficult? Let me know what you thought of this book and the processes described!
