The new issue (June 2006) of Working Mother arrived a few days ago along with a ton of other magazines I subscribe to, and as always, it's chock full of interesting resources for working moms of all walks of life. This issue's main focus is on the 2006 Best Companies for Women of Color, with a huge section that includes profiles of the winning companies, information about sponsors, and a gripping article called "What Color is Your Rolodex?". Great stuff, WM, but the piece that really sucked me in (and made me grab the Kleenex) was Carol Lin's article, entitled "Yes, You Can!".
For those who aren't already familiar with her, Lin is a CNN weekend anchor whose husband died of cancer when their child was just a wee Little. One section really got me in the heart (and mind):
"...Sometimes I'm so tired, I could cry. What gets me through the hard days? Other moms, especially mine, and friends and even total strangers at the park who laugh with me about the hilarious business of raising a child. ...Some might call me a 'single mom.' But that's an inaccurate label. ... How about Power Mom? Or Double Mom? You get no break unless friends step in or you pay for a babysitte. I believe that deserves a special name. ..."
OH so true! Thank you, Working Mother, for hosting Carol Lin as your guest columnist this month! Workerettes, if any of you are also single moms, please take the time to leave a comment with suggestions and tips about how you make it through the week with your kids, jobs, etc. I think we need our very own convention one of these days; right along with that "special name"!

Happy Birthday Mel!!
