Suffering From Job Burnout? What's At Risk?

No motivation?  Do you dread hearing the alarm clock in the morning?  Don't just shrug off work place stress because it can be effecting your physical health, as well as your emotional well-being.

Beliefnet printed a story called, "Don't Get Scorched By Job Burnout," where they looked at how on the job stress can take a toll on your life.  Job stress can be linked to heart conditions, immune and musculoskeletal disorders, mental anguish, absenteeism, and of course job performance.  Individuals and employers can not afford to ignore burnout symptoms.

What to do?  Try and catch it early.  Don't let it get progressively worse until the effects are irreversible.

  • Look at your lifestyle.  Does it resonate with your long-term goals?  Are you happy with the balance in your life?
  • Create free-time.
  • Impose more boundaries between work and home.  Don't bring your technology home with you.  No laptops or cell phones.
  • Create "you" time at work.  Jog or walk at lunch, sit in a quiet room, something to let your mind rest.

If you are miserable, seriously consider changing jobs.  Your health is more important.

Amy -- tanks for these tips and a great article... Many years ago I did burn out and while I loved my work -- it took time to get my energy back. Now I am more careful and these tips are a good reminder.

It's a bit harder for those of us who do what we love to do daily -- after awhile you forget you are working so hard:-) What do you think?

I agree. I really can say I like my job, but it can be overwhelming. And I think sometimes it's harder in situations like ours because we seem to always try and justify why we're overtired or overworked because we enjoy our jobs, and don't want to look for other work.

I think time management and orgaization are really the key. Also, learning to say "no" during the times we know we already have a lot on our plate.
