
Foods rich in vitamins A and C help support the body's defense mechanisms, important in fighting off bacteria and viruses. Food chain Giant Eagle, sponsors health notes, which recommends certain fruits and vegetables high in A and C.
- Cantaloupe: 1/4 of a melon provides 100% of the Daily Value (DV) for vitamin A, and 80% of the DV for vitamin C.
- Papaya: 1/4 of a melon provides over 70% of DV for vitamin C, as well as some Vitamin A.
- Red Bell Peppers: 1/4 of a pepper provides over 100% of the DV for vitamin C, and 25% for Vitamin A.
- Romaine lettuce: Just 6 leaves contains nearly 100% of the DV for Vitamin A, and some Vitamin C.
Both A and C increase white blood cells, and strengthen the cells that line our airways. In general, citrus fruits and tomatoes have large amounts of Vitamin C, and deep green vegetables have large amounts of vitamin A.
