"I Pledge Allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America." These words might not ever have been muttered from our mouths if not for Betsy Ross.
Ms. Ross was a widow struggling to run her own upholstery business when she was approached by George Washington, Robert Morris, and George Ross, to sew the first American Flag. After receiving design approval, she completed the flag sometime in late May or early June 1776, and the Declaration of Independence was read aloud for the first time at Independence Hall in Philadelphia in July 1776.
You can read all about the history of Flag Day, and why we celebrate it. But today I'm going to think about what the flag means to me, especially during this time with our men and women in Iraq, and say thanks to our troops, to our founding father's, and thanks to Betsy Ross!
