Owning a home means I end up on tons of mailing lists. Most of the junk mail and solicitations I receive end up in the recycle bag immediately, but mailings from a local Realtor slow me down a little. From time to time, she mails out recipes, poems, and other little tidbits, just to keep her name in front of locals. (Talk about building your brand...I plan to meet with her next week to discuss listing my house for sale!)
Today I came across a poem she sent out that stopped me in my tracks. Sent out in celebration of Mother's Day, it was a copy of a portion of Dr. Maya Angelou's Phenomenal Woman. I enjoyed it so much that I set it aside to share with you, my fellow Workerettes.
I think it's a lovely way to start the weekend. Enjoy this portion first:
Phenomenal Woman by Maya Angelou
Pretty women wonder where my secret lies.
I'm not cute or built to suit a fashion model's size
But when I start to tell them,
They think I'm telling lies.
I say,
It's in the reach of my arms
The span of my hips,
The stride of my step,
The curl of my lips.
I'm a woman
Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That's me.
Want to read the rest? It's a wonderful, inspirational piece. You can read the entire poem on this website.
