It's an issue a lot of parents are struggling with; kids and cell phones. It is a matter of convenience. It's nice to be able to call your child to make sure they are ok, and for them to be able to check in with you whenever they need to.
The downfall is the bill! Family Matters suggests a new phone called the TicTalk, made by Enfora and LeapFrog. It is a parent controlled cell phone designed with the school aged child in mind. Parents control every aspect of the phone from who can call it, to which numbers can be dialed from the phone, and at what times.
Parents sign onto the TicTalk site, and they can program they phone to their liking. Not only does the phone function as a communication tool, it also comes with educational games, and text messaging, which is also programmed by parents. Parents can go so far as programming weekly spelling words, or time reminders, that will automatically update for whenever you program it to update.
Another positive, the TicTalk is prepaid and good for 90 days so there's no horrifying statements at the end of the month.
