I know I often question the diet and eating habits of my pre-schooler. Is he getting proper nutrition? Am I helping him get enough protein? Is it OK that he eats three meals today, but tomorrow he'll only eat two bites of mac-n-cheese and 5 french fries? I seem to miss the bottle days, when I knew exactly how much he was getting.
Giant Eagle posted an article called, "Preschool Nutrition and Eating Habits" on their website. It has some helpful tips and guidelines to abide by, and help mom's not worry so much!
- Portions: 1-2 ounces of meat, 1 egg, 1/3-1/2 cup beans, 2 tablespoons of peanut butter or soy butter, 1/4 cup cooked veggies, 1/2 cup raw veggies, 1/2 cup fruit juice.
- Start small and let them take seconds if they wish.
- Involve them in prep and shopping. Allow them to make choices, do you want carrots or broccoli?
- Set reasonable time length for eating. When they start playing, excuse them.
- Limit liquids at mealtime. They fill up small stomachs.
There is more information in the article that helps you gage where you and your family are. I found it helpful. I also asked my pediatrician about vitamins and he said they can't hurt, but as long as your child is eating proteins, and some fruits and veggies, they aren't necessary.
