The Fourth of July and fireworks go hand in hand, but safety is always a concern. So how can you choose a public display that will keep your family safe? The National Council on Fireworks Displays has some good tips posted on its website.
- Always respect the barriers that are set up at the display. They are there for a reason, and are set-up by the professionals who are monitoring the event, usually the local fire department.
- Do not touch any firework that is on the ground that was suppose to go off but didn't.
- Leave pets at home. The loud booms and screech's hurt pets sensitive ears, and they will try and run away from the noise.
- Leave your own personal fireworks at home. Don't bring sparklers or firecrackers to public events because they can be dangerous in large crowds.
For those of you that do your own at home, the Council suggests you don't! They say leave it to the professionals because thousands of people get severely injured every year while they are "being careful" with their fireworks.
The site also gives a list of what fireworks are legal in each state. Be safe and have a happy Independence Day!
