My mom is a teacher, so she has the Summer off just as I did when I was still in school. I remember looking forward to doing Summer projects as a family. About.com has a great list of ideas that are fun for any budget.
- Put on a play. Have the kids in the neighborhood help, have rehearsals and invite other families over for the "big show."
- Draw a self-portrait. If you're not artistically inclined you can always do a silhouette of your shadow. Just place a lamp in front of a light colored wall so you can see the silhouette of your face, tape a piece of white paper on the wall and follow the outline! If you use a marker be sure to double up on the paper so it doesn't bleed through onto the wall.
- Have a treasure or scavenger hunt.
- Have a talent show.
- Make paper airplanes and then have a contest whose can go the farthest.
- Have a pet parade.
- Host an Olympics. You can play balloon volleyball, relay races, egg toss, etc.
Once you start thinking the possibilities are endless. It's a great way to spend quality time with your kids, and an opportunity for them to see you in a different role.
