Time after time, study after study, people with troubled marriages always blame it on poor communication. About.com gives some ideas that will help you start conversations.
- Is it OK to use a charge card for items such as clothing, gas, groceries? Financial questions may be a sore subject between you and your partner, but maybe this is a good question to start with.
- Hair left on soap bothers me. We do have to learn to share a lot of things; some very personal. So this may seem like an unimportant question, but it could lead to other things that are pet-peeves.
- I will be willing to relocate to advance my partners career. Very important question. It might not be relevant now, but you never know what opportunities may fall in your lap!
- Both of us will work when we have children. Biggie. Will mom stay home, or maybe dad wants to stay home? Will it even be financially possible?
- We will open our gifts on Christmas Eve. This is another minor question, but it could turn into a fight if it's not talked about previously because everyone has their own family traditions.
These are just some statements that will hopefully help spark some conversation with you and your partner. Or at the least, get you thinking about starting conversation!
