- What steps did you follow to build your business? Are you still in the process of planning a new business?
I am still in the process of working out the business model. The first step was of course conception of the project. The next step that I took was to work out the tools needed to create the project. In my case php and mysql were something that I was already familiar with, so I used them to create the site. The next step was to start updating the site in earnest so that I could determine if finding blogs in each category every day is actually viable. Following the site updates is the marketing aspect which I am in the middle of doing right now. The next step will be stabilization for me, when I am able to have a working site that is marketed to enough people to draw traffic and therefore revenue from the site.
I know that the marketing aspect is something that will always be there, but right now it is and has to be my main focus. I have to go from zero viewers to having a reliable amount of viewers each day which is quite a challenge for a site that hasn’t been around for very long.
- Please tell us about the resources you’ve used thus far and would recommend to others (or steer them away from). Take a moment to share your educational background (both academic and work-based) and point out things that have helped or hindered you along the way from that education.
I’ve used a multitude of resources for the development of the site. They are listed on my Thanks page. Following the official launch of the site, I have moved on to the marketing aspect of the site. I have a working site so now I need to get traffic to the site. I’ve used various search submission tools, but I believe that word of mouth will be the best tool in my arsenal. Whenever I link a site, I try to post a comment on the page that I’ve linked. The purposes of that are twofold. I would like the author to know that I have listed them on the site so that they can ask to be removed if they do not approve of being listed. The second purpose is that it provides me with backlinks to my site. At 14 blogs a day, that can add up. Those comments are what lead to me being in this Meet and Greet and I would like to thank Melonie and Workerette for this opportunity. I am hoping that eventually there will be a bit of a buzz in the blogging community about my site.
My educational background is a Bachelor of Engineering in the discipline of Metallurgy. That is not a common background for people in my field I don’t think. I worked in the world of metals after graduation for about seven and a half years. At that point, I was downsized out of a job. I took that news very well. With a severance package in hand, I was given the opportunity to try things that are completely unrelated to my line of study. I have taken that opportunity and tried a myriad of things. Web design and promotion seems to be something that I really enjoy. I’ve helped design a few sites, but Blog of the Day is the first public site that I’ve seen from inception to final product on my own.
