* What's the worst advice you've been given with regard to building or operating your business? How about the best advice?
The worst advice was that I couldn't do it. My response to this sentiment has always been an emphatic, "Watch me!" Never say never, because if someone else can do it, so can you. It takes persistence and determination.
My advice is to learn from every writer you meet or read about, especially those who publish what you would like to publish. Educate yourself through courses or seminars, too. Unions and writers' organizations are wonderful in that you meet writers who are ahead of you in their career. It inspires you. Also make sure you read good writing and not junk, though any reading is beneficial.
* What challenges have you overcome during your endeavor? Please describe something that impacted you financially or intellectually and how you got past it.
My divorce was the greatest challenge. As I plodded through school and work as a typist at a law firm, I vowed to make my life better and happy. The choices I've made since then have been the best choices I could have made for me. They don't always turn out right, but I can go to sleep at night knowing I've done my best.
