One thing you can do is go to Gas Buddy.com to compare prices in your area. This is a great site that lists the average prices around the US and Canada and then allows you to click on your area to see what stations are offering the lowest prices. This could also be helpful if your planning a trip via your vehicle.
If you can't check the Internet, gas buddy recommends steering clear of affluent stations and also locations that are right off highway exits if possible. Edmunds.com offers some tips to improve your car's fuel economy.
- Accelerate smoothly. Driving aggressively cuts mileage by 33% on the highway, and 5% around town.
- Use cruise control whenever possible. The Energy Department says every 5 miles you go over 60 mph is equal to an additional 20 cents per gallon for gas.
- Make sure tires have adequate pressure, and do not overload your car with excessive weight. The heavier the load, the more fuel it takes.
Another idea good for workerette's, plan your car trips. If you have to go to the grocery store, can you also go to the dry cleaner in the same trip? Hopefully this will help you save, even if it's just a few dollars, they add up!
