Does Your Eating Style Make You Fat?

Yesterday I checked out several back issues of Health magazine from the library as part of my search for resources that will help me learn how to eat better and become more fit without driving myself (or my loved ones!) crazy with guilt or calorie-counting.  In their April 2006 issue I found an excellent article called "Is Your Eating Style Making You Fat?"  The author, Fran Smith, does well at helping identify what "type" of eater you are, giving you a description of that eating style's habits and downfalls, and ways to avoid them or build better eating habits.

The seven types of eaters described are:

  • The emotional eater
  • The fast-food fanatic
  • The mindless muncher
  • The frenzied feeder (Sound familiar, busy Workerettes?)
  • The solo snacker
  • The disconnected diner

Sound like something you'd like to take a look at so you can determine whether your eating style is making you pack on pounds without realizing it?  Try their online quiz by going to Health.com and clicking on "Web Exclusives".  At the very least, you'll be able to gauge whether you're falling victim to any of these types' habits and how often you're doing so...it may be a step in the right direction or a positive affirmation that you're already making changes from past years!

I do not believe that an eating style could make you fat. Your metabolism type is the only one responsible for your weight.

Actually, Lucy, there are a lot of factors. For instance, if you're not exercising, and overeating, you're not only going to not lose weight, you're going to gain weight. One of the keys to the quiz and the styles discussed in the article is overeating...most of them have to do with overeating, frankly. For example, an individual who is constantly eating fast food, especially if they "super size" their meals, is going to be consuming larger portions, more fat, and the like. Even if they only eat three meals a day, they are most likely consuming more calories than the average person needs. Add in driving everywhere instead of walking, and plopping in front of the TV for hours after work each day, and they will probably not maintain a healthy weight, even if they have a high metabolism. (And even if others think they look slim, like myself, they'll notice that their body doesn't feel up to par when it comes to things like hoofing it up the stairs every day at home and running around in the yard with the kids. Your cholesterol levels can be up and your energy level down even if you appear "average" to everyone else.)

How TRUE! I do just what you said I shouldn't. Oh Well!!!!

My problem is the fast food, personally...gets me every time! AUGH!
