About.com reports that more than 60 million Americans suffer from heartburn at least once a month, and 25 million Americans experience heartburn pain daily!  So how can you help yourself avoid this uncomfortable condition?

1. Stop smoking.
2. Avoid becoming overweight.
3. Pay attention to the foods you eat when you experience the pain.
4. Don't sleep immediately following a meal.
5. Watch your posture, avoid bending after meals.
6. Avoid tight belts or pants

Dhearts.com suggests these non-medicinal remedies:

• Oil of Clove-Put a few drops in water.
• Almonds-Eating raw almonds is suppose to relieve heartburn.

Heartburn is caused when the lower part of the esophagus is weakened, or opens inappropriately.  This allows acid and other stomach contents to go back into the esophagus which causes irritation. (About.com)
