Family vacations are usually the ones that the resorts and such tout. After all, places like Disneyworld and Sea World make billions off families making good use of the opportunities presented by the travel industry.
But what happens if you're a single adult who doesn't need a park pass for four? Or if you're a parent and spouse who wants to get away for some much-needed "me" time? Traveling alone isn't mentioned very frequently, unless it's to and from the gym or grocery store while the babysitter's in charge. Despite the stigma some folks place on the lonely single traveler, tons of companies such as spas, adventure travel agencies, cruise lines and senior groups encourage single travelers and even cater specifically to them. In fact, for those who are single parents, there are agencies and locations that are set up to meet your specific needs as well.
There are some neat websites out there to find out about such events and adventures, and I recently came across a book along those lines too. Traveling Solo by Eleanor Berman is now in its fifth edition and it's chock full of ideas for those who are adventurous (Nepal trek, anyone?) and those who just want to sit back and relax (ahhh, spa!) as well. Look for it next time you're at the library, then start dreaming of your next trip...alone, with a partner, or with the whole family!

Traveling Solo offers advice and ideas for more than 250 trips for solo travelers. This book helps a solo traveler chooses a trip that is right for him or her. Eleanor Berman, the author’s book points out some of the pleasures to traveling solo: you will have a vacation strictly to your individual tastes, energies, and timetables; will go wherever you please, do exactly whatever you want to do, and meet interesting new people of all ages along the way. From this guide you will get advice about how to travel safely and intelligently while alone.
