If you feel anxious, think about how your child feels! Going off to meet new friends, teachers, a new environment, structured day, the big school bus, etc. It may be especially difficult for kids who may not have been in a daycare or pre-school setting. Not all children will be anxious, some look forward to a new adventure, but just in case, Berkeley Public Library has posted some good books to read with your child to make the transition smooth.
- Carlson, Nancy. Look Out Kindergarten, Here I Come. Although Henry looks forward to going to kindergarten, he's not so sure about staying there.
- Cazet, Denys. Never Spit on Your Shoes. An exhausted Arnie tells mom all about the first day of school.
- Cohen, Miriam. Will I Have A Friend? Jim worries about finding a friend in school and spends the first day searching for one.
- DePola, Tomie. Meet the Barkers: Morgan and Moffat Go To School. Twins enjoy starting school, especially receiving gold stars.
- Schwartz, Amy. Annabelle Swift, Kindergartner. Spunky Annabelle's older sister gives her some unusual tips for her first day of school.
The list has many more recommendations, with all types of view points and story lines. I know my son seems to understand and takes time to ask questions when we read books, so this might help. Anyone out there sending their little one off for the first time? Any advice for other moms?
