Keeping the spirit of Breast Cancer Awareness month alive, beliefnet.com has posted some untruths about mammographies.
- If my doctor doesn't recommend it, I don't need it. Don't wait for your doctor to bring it up. You ask to discuss the issue with them.
- I'll be exposed to too much radiation. The radiation from today's quality mammography equipment is minimal. It is far more dangerous not to find breast cancer at its earliest stage than to be exposed to a low dose of radiation.
- There's no family history of breast cancer, so I don't have to worry. 80% of the women who get breast cancer have had no family history. If there is history, you should get checked more often. But, all women once they reach age 40, need to get regular mammograms.
- I don't need a mammogram unless I feel a lump. Screening mammograms are for women with no lumps or other symptoms. The best time to find breast cancer is before you can feel it.
Take care of yourselves ladies!
