Flu season is here. Beliefnet.com says even with flu vaccinations, the flu infects about 5%-20% of Americans each year. Even though most people recover within a week or so, an estimated 36,000 Americans die each year from the flu, and 200,000 go to the hospital. Here are some suggestions to reduce your risk of infection if you cannot get vaccinated.
- Avoid close contact with anyone who is sick.
- Stay home when you are sick.
- Cover your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing.
- Clean your hands often. Hands are the number one vehicle for spreading germs.
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth, since it's almost impossible to keep your hands clean at all times!
They also recommend getting proper sleep, eating nutritious meals, drinking plenty of water, engaging in regular exercise, and finding ways to manage stress. These things will help your immune system stay strong.
