Travel will require a little more work if you don't have a valid passport; especially if you're traveling with young children. About.com posted the article that says as part of the "Western Travel Initiative," the US is implementing the new law that says as of January 8, 2007, all people travelling the airways (adults and kids) from the Caribbean, Bermuda, Panama, Mexico and Canada, need to have a passport.
Cruise passengers have a reprieve until June 1, 2009. As well as land border crossings from Canada and Mexico, which will not require passports until June 2009.
You need to start early because it can take up to six weeks to get your passport, and with demand expected to soar, it will probably take longer.
When applying for a passport for children under age 14, personal appearances are required by both parents and the child, and you'll need to show several documents including child's citizenship, and proof that you are the parents. You can visit travel.state.gov/passport for all the requirements.
Adult passports are $97 and children under age 16 are $82.
