Sweetest Day is a national Holiday founded in Cleveland, Ohio. Although it is now about getting gifts for your sweetheart, it did not begin that way.
About.com gives us the true history. I always thought it was a made-up holiday by the people at American greetings, as a ploy to sell more cards. But actually, it is about Philanthropist, Herbert Birch Kingston, who was a candy employee at a factory in Cleveland in 1922. As a way to reach out to the less fortunate during the Great Depression, he delivered thousands of boxes of candy to people throughout the city.
Clevelanders have brought the tradition with them to other cities and states, and now "Sweetest Day" is observed on the third Saturday every October. So go buy someone you love a small token of appreciation!
