Today, it's not only teenagers, but pre-teens who are overly concerned with what they wear. Unfortunately for parents, there is no such thing as a one-size fits-all when it comes to children's fashion taste. Rainbow Babies and Children's Hospital offers some simple guidelines to follow on this matter.
- Remember the basics. All children need are adequate nutrition, shelter, seasonally appropriate clothing, physical and moral safety, and socialization.
- Ask questions. Does the child's concern about the brand result in frequent parent-child conflict?
- Does this interfere with daily routines such as getting ready for school?
- Is this interest associated with school or peer pressures?
- Does the child limit participation in social activities because of the clothing he or she has to wear?
If any of these are issues, Rainbow recommends addressing the issue. They suggest setting specific expectations and consequences both positive, and negative. Ensure inappropriate behavior such as whining or sulking does not result in getting the product he or she desires.
Give the child the opportunity to earn extra money to help pay for the more expensive items they want to purchase. It will teach them responsibility, and the value of money. Unfortunately, the role of parent often means making decisions that will make us "unpopular" with our children. But on the bright side, neither development nor achievement are affected by fashion!
