According to Deidre Dolan and Alexandra Zissu, authors of the brand new book The Complete Organic Pregnancy, the right time for many women to start trying to go organic may be during their prenatal months -- or even slightly before. If you've been trying to make major lifestyle changes, such as only buying locally farmed produce or buying antibiotic and hormone-free beef, it may be easier to make these changes when you're already prepping your "temple" for a new arrival.
They also mention that moms-to-be who are trying to kick habits (especially those that involve alcohol or caffiene *guilty as charged on that last one!*) may have more willpower during pregnancy, or even in the "trying to conceive" stages. After all, at this time of our lives we sometimes sit down and think, This isn't just for me; it's for my baby!
I just started reading this book today, and even though I already buy a lot of organic foods, especially dairy and produce, and invest in nontoxic cleansers for my home, I'm still impressed by their research, tips, and the interesting "diary" entries from folks like Barbara Kingsolver. Even if you aren't pregnant, if you're trying to find ways to "green" up your home and your menus, this may be very helpful! I consider myself to be about an intermediate level when it comes to being green; I've already learned from this new book and look forward to reading the rest of it. (Right after I indulge in some organic brownies. heh heh)
