How do you decide which outdoor plants come inside for the winter? About.com helps you to decide which are worth keeping.
- Keep only healthy plants. If it has been struggling all summer, it won't improve indoors.
- Make sure the plant doesn't have disease or pests. The problems can quickly spread to other healthy indoor plants.
- Baby your favorites. Make extra time to care for the ones that mean the most to you.
- If you think the plant would look good indoors, try it. As long as you have the proper light it should do fine.
- Some plants can survive winter in the garage as long as the temperature doesn't go below 20 degrees F. Just remember they are out there, and water them.
- Consider bringing in tomato or small pepper plants. They are actually tropical perennials and given enough light, will continue to produce fruits all winter.
- Be realistic about space and light.
Give outdoor plants time to acclimate to the indoors. Bring them in when the windows are open, they'll adjust to the change in temperature and humidity more easily if the change is gradual.
