If you make the effort to find meaningful ways to spend your time, you will get more energy. Because when we help others, we forget about our own problems, which bring us down and make us feel tired and old.
Beliefnet.com offers these tips as food for thought:
- Conserve your strength. Some individuals are perpetually needy. They may have good intentions, but don't always feel like you have to rescue people, let them help themselves. Just offer your help, but make sure to keep your needs first.
- Think big, start small. Energy is abundant when we're young. But as we age, energy depletes, so it's necessary to reach out and make that extra effort. It might seem small but pick up the phone and call that friend you've lost touch with, or offer to help your neighbor pick tomatoes.
- Find a need that meets you "in the heart." What are you good at? Can you fix things? Are you musically inclined? Volunteer to do arts/crafts? Offer your talents to others.
- Use your wisdom. Keep in mind the skills and gifts you've developed over time. You can try to educate people and teach them what you know and have learned.
Stay creative and use you skills to help the lives of other people. It will help you relieve some of the stresses in your life, and hopefully you'll feel happier and better about yourself.
