The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety conducts test crashes on cars to measure how much impact the cars can handle. About.com published the top 10 from that list.
- Volvo S80 (2004-2005). This car scored best for both front and rear impact protection.
- Volvo S60 (2004-2005). This car also received high marks for front and side impact.
- Acura TL (2004-2005). This mid-size luxury car scores top marks for frontal and side impact. Rear protection was marginal.
- Ford Taurus/Mercury Sable (2004-2005). These large family cars came in tops for frontal impact, and marginal for rear.
- Saab 9-3 (2004-2005). The mid-size, moderately priced car has top ratings for frontal, side, and rear impact; a perfect sweep!
- Toyota Camry (2004-2005). Side airbags give Camry a top rating, as well as frontal.
- Honda Accord (2004-2005). Rated well because of side airbags and also for frontal and side impact. Unfortunately, rear impact rated poor.
- Volkswagen New Beetle (2004-2005). This is best pick for small cars. Rated well for frontal impact, and good for rear impact.
- Toyota Sienna (2004-2005). Minivans are among the safest cars on the road. IIHS only has frontal-impact data for minivans, but they record extensive injury data; the Toyota Sienna scores the highest rating in every single category.
- Ford Freestar/Mercury Monterey (2004-2005). This van rated high in head/neck injury.
If you're in the market for a new car, I hope these will help you.
