Chapped lips can occur in any season, but they are most common during the cold winter months, especially with children. About.com offers these helpful hints.
- Moisturize Your Home. Keep the air moist with a humidifier and make sure you keep it clean.
- Stop licking. Remind children not to lick their lips because the constant wetting and drying causes chapped lips.
- Cover Your Face. Wind, cold and sun contribute to drying out your lips. Always wear a scarf, and remember lip balm with SPF in the summer months.
- Use Lip Balm. Make sure it doesn't have flavoring that will encourage children and adults to lick their lips. Use a petroleum based product or even plain petroleum jelly which is very inexpensive.
- Keep Clean. Make sure lips are free of food and drink. Also, reapply lip balm after eating.
