Most of us have had that awkward moment of silence when you're in an elevator with a stranger, or when you see an old aquaintance you havn't spoken with in awhile. Do you try and hide, or do you approach them and start small talk?
There's an article posted on lifescript.com titled, "Now You're Talking" that gives some great advice on what to do in these situations, but also offers these tips on how to start conversation with anyone:
- Ask Open Ended Questions. This way it gives the other person the chance to offer as much information as they want.
- Spark People's Imagination. Ask a question on their opinion of a current event or if they could meet a celebrity, who would they choose.
- Give Them Something to Work With. Offer some free information once the conversation gets started. If they ask, "Are you headed home?" Instead of just a yes or no try, "Yes, I spent the weekend celebrating my friend's birthday and I'm a little tired."
- Know Your Stuff. Initiate with topics that you know, this will help your confidence level and encourage you to be more open.
- Look For The Details. Anything from behavior to an unusual accent can start a discussion.
The term small talk almost gives off a negative vibe, but it's important in order for you to meet new people, and not feel awkward in social settings.
