Workerette's everywhere should be interested in this. Inc.com posted an article on their site that addresses the real issue of parents who stress out about after school care.
According to a survey conducted by Brandeis University in New York, of 1,755 working parents nationwide, one in 20 said they were severely impacted by concerns about after school childcare. The level of stress at work can manifest itself in everything from minor workplace disruptions, to lower job satisfaction, and it can be very toxic to employee attitudes, work performance, and well-being. This leads to time off, and it's estimtaed that companies could have lost as much as $300 billion in productivity from issues stemming from stress over after school care.
By contrast, parents with lower stress were thosew who felt they had more control over their work schedules, or have a partner whose work schedule allowed them to be home after school.
The study recommends employers seriously consider giving employees some flexibility in their schedules with flex time, telecommuting, or flex-space. Companies can also look into community services, educating supervisors about the needs of working parents so they will have some understanding, and think about some supportive policies to put into place.
I know as a working mom, this rings very true. I am fortunate that there happens to be an onsite childcare where I work, that includes a great pre-school program. Child Care is something that is very appealing to prospective employees, and it's just a reality that companies need to adjust for.
