Today's Oprah, A Show For All Women

Can women have it all?  That's the topic of today's Oprah Show with ABC's Elizabeth Vargas.  Vargas talks with Oprah about the struggle of deciding to stay home with the kids, or try to work and be a mom, and her decision to step down from the nightly news anchor position.

Every woman has this decision to make in some fashion.  Even if you don't have children, as a woman you have to make that decision.  If you are not able to have children because of medical reasons, then you're faced with a whole slew of other decisions.  Adoption, fertility trials, not having chidren, etc.

I think no matter what choice you make, there are times when you wish your situation were different.  I am a full-time working mother.  Yes, it is hard when your child is sick, or on a beautiful summer day when you wish you could just spend the day at the park with your child, but we all make some sacrifces as parents.  I believe that the debate is good because the bottom line is, we love our children so much, we all want the best for them.  Weigh in, I'd love to hear from more parents.

I've always been disappointed in moms who get deep into the stay at home versus work outside the home mom wars. I work at home, but I don't think bad of those who choose whether from necessity or preference to work outside the home. It really is about what each person thinks is best.

I like the way my mother puts it. A mother should stay at home with her children if at all possible, but the definition of possible includes whether she feels comfortable staying at home. If she thinks it would drive her nuts, that's enough reason.

It's such a "war" between women because EVERYONE suffers from the lack of parenting that takes place when mothers decide to make work a priority over their kids.

Can women find a balance in having kids AND working? Very few. Very very very few. Everyone else, who is unable to strike that balance should have made a decision for either or.

I don't get women who have kids and then say "I just can't imagine staying home all day with them" or "I'm not fulfilled in being 'just' a mom". It's crushing to me when I think of those kids.

If a woman has to work (or if both parents have to work) out of necessity, well, that's different. But beyond being a single parent, there are few reasons that you shouldn't be able to make enough adjustments to have one parent stay home to raise their children.

I completely agree with the mother who said that she would sell her house before she went back to work. Her priorities are in the right order. You can't have kids and work and not feel pulled in two different directions. And why would you want to put your kids through that - making them feel like they are taking a back seat to your professional life?

In our society, we don't discipline our kids because we're afraid of making them feel badly about themselves (which is ridiculous) yet we're completely okay with making a kid feel less important to a parent than his or her job. That is pathetic and sad.

I actually wish this debate could just end already. Women cannot have it "all." Why you ask? Because we all define "all" differently. What fulfills me may not fulfill you and what's right for me may not be right for you. So no one's right or wrong and everybody sees it differently. So can't we all just band together and stop debating each other? I don't see the point arguing about this anymore.

If you don't see the point in discussing it - you should stop by some of the child free by choice boards....that might awaken you as to why it needs to be discussed. When one person's decisions affect another person, well, it becomes a topic for debate.
