Today's daily health alert on vitacost.com warns us about heavy metal toxin dangers in our homes. If exposed to high levels of metal, you could experience hearing loss, personality changes, impaired concentration, loss of feeling in certain body parts, and in extreme cases, blood poisoning.
Household items that can contain lead, mercury or other heavy metals include:
- glazed pottery
- herbal supplememts, especially those from China
- garden pesticides/herbicides
- leaded crystal
- old paint
- and some jewelry from China
Until just recently, arsenic was used in pressure-treated lumber. So if you're working with older lumber that has been treated, make sure you wear gloves. There's no government oversight on what's in homeopathic, herbal or complementary products.
Has anyone experienced heavy metals in any other products?
