I'm sure by now you've heard or read about the benefits of upping your intake of foods and beverages rich in antioxidants. First the experts told us to eat lots of cranberries; I think my kids and I ate pounds of Craisins in a month! There are also blueberries, of course, and pomegranates (check out POM juice and tea for if you're into the fruit that some believe may have been the downfall of Eve).
Wine country benefitted from red wine's allure and antioxidants, and now the chocolate companies are getting in on the act. And which one is easiest to market to us womenfolk? Chocolate, of course!
Now, don't get me wrong, I like some milk chocolate here and there, but my true love is dark chocolate. Remember those little mini bars of Hershey's products you could buy in a bag? I was that gal who would trade you all the rest of her stash for the Special Dark bars that most people didn't want anyway. And hey, we all win then!
Needless to say, I was beyond thrilled when Hershey's started their campaign to market their Special Dark chocolate by pointing out the antioxidants in it. You see, I'm married to a very fit fella who is not much into candy, soda, or fast food. This gives me a very valid reason to indulge from time to time, and frankly, it's probably one of the healthiest things I do. (I never claimed to be a workout wonder.)
Wondering if there's really any benefit to eating chocolate, or looking for a way to prove the point to doubters (like my hubby)? Check out the nice big two-page ad spread in this month's Working Mother magazine. Apparently, according to Hershey's, one serving (ie one bar) of Hershey's Special Dark chocolate is equal to 2/3 of a cup of blueberries, 2 cups of green tea, or a glass of red wine. There's even a recipe for microwave S'mores. How's that for a quickie pick-me-up on your coffee break? And if you have one too many, you can still drive home.

There's such a thing as "one too many" with chocolate????
